Toronto Atmospheric Monitoring of Emissions (TAME): Evaluating progress and co-benefits while avoiding pitfalls on the way to net-zero.
The TAME project is focused on improving how we track greenhouse gas emissions in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). As local governments work toward meeting their net-zero targets by 2050, this initiative offers essential data and analysis to support effective policy development and reduce emissions.
Our Mission
The TAME project is dedicated to equipping the GTA with atmospheric observatories that quantify emissions of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), and monitor air quality through measurements of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3), and particulate matter (PM). By integrating "top-down" atmospheric measurements with "bottom-up" inventory assessments, we aim to validate emissions data and track progress toward climate goals. We are also developing state-of-the-art capabilities to measure fluorinated gas species (F-gases) to monitor increases in atmospheric F-gases caused by refrigerant leaks. We will use these measurements to establish best practices in the installation and maintenance of heat pumps.
Why It Matters
Municipal governments control approximately half of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. With over 400 municipalities committed to reducing these emissions, the need for accurate monitoring has never been more urgent. Our project not only helps validate existing inventories but also identifies effective policies that lead to significant reductions in urban emissions.
What We Do
Atmospheric Monitoring: We deploy advanced technologies to measure greenhouse gases and other atmospheric tracers, providing real-time data on urban air quality and greenhouse gas concentrations .
Policy Support: Our findings will assist local, provincial, and federal governments in developing evidence-based policies that accelerate emissions reductions.
Community Engagement: We collaborate with community partners to ground our research in local practices, ensuring that our work resonates with those it impacts.
Key Features
Comprehensive Data Collection: Utilizing a network of atmospheric observatories, we measure not only greenhouse gases but also co-emitted air quality pollutants.
Innovative Partnerships: Our collaboration with organizations like Environment and Climate Change Canada and The Atmospheric Fund ensures a holistic approach to monitoring and policy development.
Focus on Best Practices: We aim to establish best practices for heat pump installation and maintenance, minimizing potential leaks of potent greenhouse gases.
